EPS announces the appointment of Mr. R. Gandhi as an Independent Director to the Board

Mumbai, 7th June 2018: Idea Cellular has launched a mega campaign for its prepaid customers providing a bonanza of offerings including unlimited calls with abundant data, assured cashback and exciting prizes such as car, bikes, smartphones on its recharges.

There has been an exponential rise in data usage leading to an all-time high mobile video consumption in India. In fact, India’s total data consumption has crossed that of US and China combined, making it the world leader. Right from the planning till the very end of promotion and screening, a lot of hard work goes into making it a success. In order to be exceptional, a movie demands a lot of thought and expertise, especially the ones which are pervasive and are cherished across generations.

Not all of your all-time favorite movies came through easily! Here is a list of 10 exceptional movies and their challenges penned down by Mr. Dinesh B. Singh, Founder, Navrasa Duende and Mr. Jatin Varma, Founder, Comic Con India.

1. Gone With the Wind (1939)
While shooting the Confederate wounded scene, there weren’t enough extras in the entire Screen Actors Guild to satisfy producer Selznick’s desire of staging no less than 2500 extras to lie in the dirt, portraying the dead and wounded Confederate soldiers toward the end of the war. At the time, the Screen Actors Guild only had 1500 to offer. As a result, Selznick saved money by ordering 1000 dummies to execute the epic suffering he wanted to portray.

2. Fiddler on The Roof (1971)
To make Topol look older, the makeup team had to clip 15 white hairs from director Norman Jewison's beard and applied them to Topol's eyebrows (seven on the left, eight on the right) to make him look older. Topol, then in his 30s, had to play a much older character.

3. Doctor Zhivago (1965)
The scene showing charge of the Partisans across the frozen lake was actually filmed in temperatures in excess of 30 degrees C (or 90 degrees F). To display a much colder scenario, cast iron sheet was placed over a riverbed and then covered with fake snow (mainly marble dust).

4. Ivan’s Childhood (1962)
Animation critic Pan Pizza, among certain sources, said that there was one morning in 2009 when the opening of the movie was briefly aired the movie by accident on the channel Cartoon Network in the US. The telecast was immediately switched back to the original streaming of Cartoon Network.

5. Jalsaghar (1958)
While in pre-production, Ray and his crew had a hard time finding a suitable location for Biswambhar Roy's palace. With sheer luck, they met a man who recommended the palace of Roy Chowdhury’s in Nimtita, known as the Nimtita Rajbari and Ray decided to scout the location. Not only did the palace turn out to be perfect for the movie but also happened to have once belonged to Upendra Narayan, whom Bandopadhyay had based his main character on when he first wrote the short story.

6. Casablanca (1942)
Due to being filmed during WWII, the production was not allowed to film at an airport after dark for security reasons. To get the same results, it used a sound stage with a small cardboard cutout airplane and forced perspective. To give the illusion of the plane being full-sized, they used little people to portray the crew preparing the plane for take-off.

7. The Dark Knight (2008)
In the hospital scene, where the Joker staggered out of Gotham General with the hospital exploding around him, the Joker twiddled with the detonator when the explosions had stopped before suddenly continuing. Heath Ledger didn't break character (rumors about it being a mistake by the effects team surfaced, which eventually turned out to be intentional), nor did he even turn to watch the explosion even when he got on the bus. It all built up to one of the most memorable scenes in the movie, with everything executed perfectly.

8. Spiderman - 1 (2002)
We all epitomize the upside-down kissing scene between Peter Parker and Mary Jane. While filming the scene, actor Tobey Maguire faced difficulty as his sinuses kept filling up with water as it was performed in driving rain. Thankfully, the scene got shot in the perfect way eventually.

9. Star wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Harrison Ford (6'1) playing Han Solo was a foot taller than Carrie Fisher (5’1) playing Princess Lela. Carrie Fisher had to stand on a box for many of her scenes with Ford in order to make up for the height difference and have her be able to appear in the frame with him.

10. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
While the biggest challenge was to transform the book into a movie with the same appeal of wizards’ world, the actors that were chosen to play the lead roles were very young and naive. A great effort was made to make them memorize the lines and while teaching them the basics of acting. The filmmakers also matched the kids’ appearances to the novels description, by giving Daniel Radcliffe playing Harry Potter green-colored contact lenses but Daniel's eyes reacted to the contacts, having the idea be dropped.

One of the things I love about the city are that you can do anything, anytime, like the day I wanted to eat a pav bhaji, this was when I could eat anything I wanted, I would just go to Sardar Pav Bhaji at Tardeo or if I wanted to eat Dal Fry, I would go to Olympia at Colaba Causeway and gorge on all my favourites. Olympia’s Dal fry is popular since the time my father was in college. Bombay has a lot to offer.”

Isn’t it hard to believe that muscle man and Bollywood hunk, John used to gorge these sinful foods at our favourite joints as well? Well, here’s some more juice, John not only enjoyed these foods but also has a record of eating 64 rotis during a meal at an unlimited thali restaurant in the city.

John admitted saying, “I remember going to Status once for an unlimited Gujarati thali, and my record there was 64 rotis, and the guy serving me was so astonished, he said ‘Saab chawal bhi hai!’ I am a complete foodie and I used to love going to Gujarati thali joints, I would explore as many as possible.”

Speaking about his style of flirting with the city, John said, “I love Bombay, the culture, the old world charm, it is a whole different world here. I especially love old theatres, my mom’s family is from Grant Road and so I used enjoy these old-world places, my initiation back into Hindi films, after a long break, was with ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’ which I saw at Bahara Talkies. One really interesting thing about Bombay is that it’s a combination of New York and Los Angeles, it’s the film capital and the commercial capital. And I proud to call it my city!”

Mumbai: Ambuja Cement Foundation supported women’s federation Shri Sorath Mahila Vikas Sahkari Samiti (SMVSM) has been conferred with the prestigious ‘Sandvik India Gender Award 2018’ in recognition of its significant role in empowering and transforming the lives of rural women through holistic initiatives, thus contributing to gender equality.

The SMVSM from Kodinar in Gujarat was honoured with this recognition under the category ‘Community Based Organisation’ for breaking gender stereotypes and overcoming conscious or subconscious bias with the help of its digital literacy initiative. The award was received by the federation’s director Motiben Chavda from the renowned Indian social worker Sindhutai Sapkal during the recently held event in Pune.

Ambuja Cement Foundation, the CSR arm of the leading cement manufacturer Ambuja Cement, helps women realise their potential by fostering and promoting holistic approaches that include facilitating them to form groups and federations, thus effecting sustainable social change. Ambuja Cement Foundation has completed its Silver Jubilee recently.

Brimming with pride, Ambuja Cement Foundation’s Head Pearl Tiwari said, “It's indeed a proud moment for us. While we have always believed that for our women sky is the limit, it is quite heartening to witness their incredible journey. ACF's women empowerment initiatives started with Kodinar but today we have been successful in making a significant change in the lives of rural women across different locations - and enabled them to transform their role from homemakers to change-makers.”

“Today, women are defying social norms, gender stereotypes and scaling new heights with their strong determination,” concluded Ms Tiwari.

The Sandvik India Gender Award supports gender initiatives, recognises excellence and commitment to gender equality, diversity and inclusion in areas such as education and social change. The selection criteria for this award included a very rigorous three-staged scrutiny process under the observation of the distinguished jury.

One of the key initiatives that enabled this federation to win the award is 'Internet Saathi'– the ongoing initiative introduced by Ambuja Cement Foundation in collaboration with its partners in order to provide entrepreneurship opportunities and withstand competition in the digital world. This program assumes even more significance at a time when the government is pushing ahead the Digital India initiative to transform the country into a digitally empowered society.

Over 100 Internet Saathis – who move in and around the villages and gather the women folks to teach them on the usage of smartphone and internet – have trained over one lakh women so far, making them capable of taking up new challenges. Through this project, SMVSM aims to train over 200 women as Internet Saathis, who will in turn educate over 2.5 lakh women by 2020.

Registered in 2012, this federation comprising of 6000 members was established to provide social security to women in rural areas. Today, with various successful initiatives to uplift social strata of women, the federation members with a corpus of Rs five crore are not only financially independent but also empowered to fight social taboos – alcoholism, domestic violence and widow discrimination.
